Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano
The museum that guards Leonardo’s mural runs on a tight weekly grid. Figures below mirror cenacolovinciano.org; ministerial notices can override them overnight.
Staff meetings, state funerals, or conservation tests can trigger partial closures (the museum has published lunch-time shutdowns for assemblies in the past). Read the news banner on the official homepage the night before.

Annual closures
- Every Monday (weekly maintenance / conservation window)
- 1 January
- 25 December
Easter Monday and 1 May have also been closed days in recent museum communications—treat public holidays as “verify twice.”
Italian ponti (long weekends) sell out weeks ahead. If your only Milan day is a Monday, the Cenacolo is simply not open—build Duomo or Castello time instead.
Timed entry waves
- Slot length: 15 minutes
- Capacity: up to 40 visitors per slot
- First wave: 08:15
- Last wave: 18:45
- Cadence: every 15 minutes
Santa Maria delle Grazie (church—separate from refectory ticket)
Active Dominican parish liturgy; tourists share space with prayer.
| Day | Morning | Afternoon / evening |
|---|---|---|
| Mon–Sat | 07:00–12:00 | 15:00–19:00 |
| Sunday & holy days | 07:30–12:30 | 15:30–21:00 |
During Mass, sightseeing may be paused—step quietly to the back or return later.
When crowds thin (slightly)
| Window | Crowd level | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 08:15–09:30 | Lower | Cool light, fewer coaches |
| 09:30–12:00 | Medium–high | Tour groups peak |
| 12:00–14:00 | Medium | Lunch dip for some operators |
| 14:00–16:30 | High | Afternoon rush |
| 16:30–18:45 | Medium–low | Day-trippers heading to trains |
I still like the first slot of the day: guards are fresh, humidity is stable, and you beat the Instagram scrum. If you hate alarms, after 17:00 is your friend.
Special entry schemes
Free first Sundays (Italian state museums)
The Cenacolo participates, but:
- Booking remains mandatory
- Tickets drop the Wednesday before at noon (Italian time)
- They vanish fast; the room feels fuller
Evening openings
Occasional night slots (>19:00) appear for city festivals—watch official announcements.
Private / corporate visits
Monday or post-closing visits exist for approved groups; no food or drink is ever allowed inside.
High-demand weeks to respect
- Easter week and spring bridges
- Salone del Mobile (April)
- June–August cruise-ship season
- Christmas markets (museum closed 25/12)
- Free-Sunday weekends
The 30-minute rule
Arrive ≥30 minutes before your printed time for voucher exchange and security. Late = void ticket, no refund—that is museum policy, not the reseller’s mood.
FAQ – hours
Usually yes except 1 January and 25 December, but verify each holiday (Easter Monday has been closed in recent years).
Italian state museums use Mondays for deep cleaning, climate checks, and staff training without public traffic.
Only if you hold a ticket for an approved extraordinary opening or a private event—not on a normal day.
